How the Hop Earth map works

Hop.Earth uses OpenStreetMap road data and separately attributed elevation sources to generate a playable 3D world. It is not built on Google Maps, and the resulting roads, widths, terrain, structures, tunnels, and intersections are game approximations rather than a photographic replica.

Road geometry

OpenStreetMap contributes mapped lines, connections, and road information created by its community.

Elevation

The official attributions list terrain sources including Copernicus DEM GLO-30 and regional French and Spanish datasets.

Game generation

Hop.Earth turns those inputs into road surfaces, terrain, and a vehicle simulation in the browser.

Why a familiar road can look unfamiliar

A map database describes features; it is not the same thing as street-level photography or a surveyed racing surface. The game has to infer and simplify width, camber, roadside treatment, junction shape, object placement, and how separated road levels connect.

  • Tunnels and bridges may be visually simplified or intersect terrain.
  • Multi-level highways can be hard to separate in a generated scene.
  • Small tracks may not be comfortable or suitable for a vehicle.
  • Recent map edits may not appear until upstream data or tiles refresh.
Not Google Maps

“Google Maps plus Need for Speed” is a catchy description used in social posts. It does not identify the underlying map provider. Credit OpenStreetMap contributors when discussing the road-data source.

Choose locations that generate well

For a first drive, use a connected main road, avoid extremely complex interchanges, and wait for road and elevation tiles before summoning the vehicle. Mountain and island routes can be spectacular, but they also make elevation or bridge limitations easier to notice.
